Delicious, unusual European cuisine – and excellent customer service!
Our restaurant and café would like to introduce you to the food of the people living in the Danube region. The dishes we offer are all freshly cooked on the premises, using local ingredients whenever possible, in a beautifully appointed restaurant looking out onto Newark’s historic castle.
The inspiration for the unique cuisine at the Danube café and restaurant flows from the 10 countries bordering Europe’s second-longest river – Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine and Romania.
Owners Ramona (who is from Romania) and John Holland offer irresistible specialities ranging from Lángoš – a savoury doughnut filled with cream cheese and served warm – to home-made Frickadellen, a deliciously tasty large meatball cooked with minced pork and beef, garlic, parsley and breadcrumbs.
Other European specialities include Pork Schnitzel or Chicken “á la Balcanica” – chicken supreme cooked in a tomato, garlic and herb sauce served with roast or creamy mashed potatoes and salad. We serve wines, spirits and beers from the Danube region too.
Cakes and desserts include Apple and Almond Cake served with vanilla-infused cream, luxurious Chocolate Marquise, or Lemon and Polenta Cake served with lemon liqueur sauce.
So whether you want a light bite or a lunch, a fine dinner or a feast, you will find wonderful, unusual food and a warm welcome at The Danube, Newark’s unique source of central European cuisine at its best.
We also provide Outside Catering and our restaurant is available for Private Functions Hire and Business Meetings.
