The president Heather Brummitt welcomed members to the June 2012 meeting and then introduced the speaker David Darby, whose talk was entitled ‘He’s Behind You!’
He went on to tell members the history of pantomime. When he was a boy he saw his first panto, starring Reg Dixon and Norman Wisdom, this having fired his interest.
Pantomime he said went back to Roman times and on to the present day. He spoke about early panto stars such as Grimaldi, George Robey and Dan Leno and showed caricatures of them he had drawn. He then talked to members about Richard Hearne, Arthur Askey, Danny La Rue and others and showed photographs of many more. He ended by getting members to join in an old Arthur Askey panto song. He was thanked by Janet Barber.
Business followed and members were given details of a coffee morning in September and a Fashion Show in October. A report was read from the WI Annual Meeting in London.
The raffle was won by Beryl Willis.
